The Guest Book records only what may be recorded. What follows are four occasions, drawn from its pages, in the language of the archive.
Great Houses are Remembered by the Occasions They Held.
The great hotels do not advertise their guests. They record them, in a private hand, in a ledger kept in the Bureau safe. The entries are factual: the date, the house, the occasion, the number of guests, the outcome. The feelings are not recorded; they are assumed.
What follows is a selection from the Guest Book of the Five Houses. Each entry is preserved as it was entered, with only the names of the living omitted where courtesy requires.
Four Occasions, Preserved.
The Hon. Catherine Harrington was married to Mr. Alistair Vance in the private chapel of the square, with the breakfast afterwards laid in the garden. The household had prepared for six months. Two hundred and forty guests were received; the guest list was not circulated, and the photographs were never published. The couple departed through the service gate, in accordance with the preference of the bride's family.
Convened to restore the east wing of the Imperial Library, the subscription was closed at two hundred guests. The waltz was danced until four in the morning. The household served champagne, coffee, and iced oysters on the hour. The proceeds were sufficient to purchase the manuscript room outright; the ball was not advertised, and has not been advertised since.
A banquet of eighteen courses was held on the solstice. The household placed a single candle in every window, and the guests remained within the House for three days. The menu was written by hand; the wines were drawn from the cellars of two founding families. No account of the conversation has been preserved, only the date, the weather, and the list of those seated at the head of the table.
A private concert was given on the terrace for forty correspondents, at which a new quartet was commissioned. The composer completed the final movement in Apartment VII the same night; the work was first heard before dawn, as the household served breakfast to those who had remained. The manuscript is now held in the library of the House.
The Next Entry is Yet to be Written.
The Guest Book remains open. Each year, the Bureau records some forty enquiries of consequence. It accepts, on average, twelve. The occasions that matter are not planned in public; they are composed in correspondence, between the Household and those who understand what a House can hold.
